Constance Clayton Calderwood died peacefully at the Terraces in Orleans, Mass., on May 6, 2014, at the age of 87.

Connie was born on May 12, 1926, in West Boylston, Mass. She grew up in a family with strong values and traditions. Connie completed her five-year nursing degree at Simmons College with her BSN in 1948 and worked with the Visiting Nurse Association in Brooklyn, N.Y., until she married Dr. Owen Calderwood on July 14, 1951.

Family came first in Connie’s life. When her children were older, she renewed her public health nursing for 12 years at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J. In 1980, the couple retired to Cape Cod where they had had a cottage since 1958 and built a new post-and-beam home on Nauset Heights. Connie found joy in gardening, her grandchildren, making wonderful meals, volunteering, and the “beach” — Connie started daily dips in mid-June and loved the boats the young people ran about in all summer.

Connie is survived by her sons Clay Calderwood of Brewster, Jamie Calderwood and his wife, Sarah Sherman, of Durham, NH, Bill Calderwood and his wife, Robin Carlaw, of Harvard, her daughter Lucy and her husband, Dick Hersey, of Brewster, her brother Paul Clayton of Hyannisport, and seven accomplished grandchildren Ruby, Alec, Peter, Lily, and Alex Calderwood, and Dickon and Will Hersey. Living by giving, Connie was loved dearly by her family, friends, and community.

A Memorial Service is planned for 10 a.m. on June 7, 2014, at the Federated Church in Orleans, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Federated Church of Orleans, 162 Main Street, E. Orleans, MA 02643.
