ORV Access Open to Inlet April 18, 2012

Posted by dstrickler on April 18, 2012

The spit is open to vehicle traffic, but only with a 2012/2013 ORV pass.

The Town of Orleans sent a reminder today that the Spit is open from Callanans Pass to the Nauset Inlet, but only for residents with beach stickers that are good for the 2012/2013 season. These ORV stickers are required as of May 15, 2012, and go on sale at the former American Legion Building lower level, 139 Main St. starting May 3, 2012. Stickers are on sale Thursday-Monday 9-4. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Alternatively, you can mail in your request for an ORV sticker by using the instructions on this page.

They also reminded us that no dogs are allowed on the beach after April 15th.

I wonder if the time has come for Nauset Heights residents to discuss the possibility that we should collectively advocate for a reduction of ORV access to the spit. Some of us remember when ORVs, or "beach buggys", were rare. But now, due to the great proliferation of SUVs, on most July and August weekends the spit resembles a parking lot more than a beach.

I realize this is a Town of Orleans responsibility, but we might wish to begin the process of suggesting that the Town and National Seashore reconsider the present arrangement.
