Nauset Heights

After the death of Willis and his wife their son Pat inherited the property. She allowed her sister Elizabeth Hersey Leonard to build a small summer cottage (48 Nauset Heights Road) on the edge of the property at the intersection of Nauset Heights Road and what became Deer Run (now renamed Red Fox Trail at its Nauset Heights end). The Romey-Keener property is adjacent to Grand View on the west now and once had part of the Mayo duck farm as a neighbor.
There were three Hersey sisters; Mary, Helen and Elizabeth. Mary died in 1959 and left the property to her sister Helen. Helen's husband was Colonel Howard Patterson, Commanding Officer of Camp Edwards.during WWII. Camp Edwards is where captured enemy German soldiers were held. Colonel Patterson used his troops to repair the old bridges in Yarmouth that were damaged during the great hurricane of 1944.
Helen & Howard Patterson left the property to Mr. and Mrs. George Leonard of Akron. Ohio in 1980. George was Elizabeth's step son and spent parts of many summers in his step mother's cottage as did also Lucretia and Bill Romey. Only a year after inheriting the property George and his wife June signed it over to their two daughters Lucretia Romey and Polly Keener in equal shares and they still own it today. Lucretia (half owner) and her husband Bill Romey have been living there year-round since Bill retired from teaching geology and geography at St. Lawrence University in 1993.
